Material selection
Material is one of the most important factors in creating packaging that feels right - visually, tactilely and functionally. It affects the experience of the product, how long the packaging lasts, how it is used and how it communicates your brand.
What influences the choice of materials?
When helping to select materials, we look at several things at once:
- Feel and look:
Do you want it to feel exclusive, natural, playful or stylish? - Field of application:
Is the packaging to be opened several times, left out in the open, stored for a long time or to protect a sensitive product? - Lifespan:
Does it need to be durable or last for a single occasion? - Budget:
Different materials and finishes affect both unit cost and initial cost.
Common materials we work with:
- Cardboard box
We use different types of cardboard depending on weight, strength and finish. It can be coated or uncoated, white or natural colour, with the option of lamination, embossing or printing directly on the surface. - Corrugated board
Often used for transport packaging but also used to make the interior of the packaging. We usually work in thicknesses of 1.2 mm-1.5 mm (F & E flute) and in the colours brown, white and black. If you are printing on a corrugated sheet, screen printing or UV printing is suitable as you can print directly on the sheet, otherwise the sheet needs to be covered with a printed sheet. - Grey board, Cardboard
Usually forms the backbone of our lined packaging and binders. This material is stiff and has a rather rough feel, consisting to 100% of recycled cardboard. We work with thicknesses from 0.5 mm up to about 3 mm and in most cases this material is coated with another material on the outside and inside. The cardboard is used when you want a stable product but with the possibility of adding all the effects you get by covering it with, for example, a printed laminated sheet, design paper or fabric. - Design papers and structures
For dressed (hard) packaging, we offer a wide range of coloured designer papers - textured or untextured - for a unique look. It can be combined with foiling or embossing to further enhance the look. - Tissue
Textile surfaces such as linen texture or bookbinding fabric give a tactile and elegant feel - often used for premium products or gift packaging. - Other materials
If necessary, we can also suggest other solutions, such as metal, wood or plastic components - depending on what you want to achieve.
If you can fold the material without it cracking, and the material is thin enough, you can probably dress a hard package, we have previously dressed products with wallpaper, cork, jeans, etc., but then you should keep in mind that this needs to be tested first.
Please get in touch with your idea and we will discuss what is possible.
